Deep abdominal pain is notoriously hard to localize, because the nerve bundles that carry it sit far from where the pain is felt. Blocking those bundles with local anesthetic can quiet pain that has not responded to medication, and the response tells your physician whether they have found the right target. These blocks are performed with imaging for precision and done as an outpatient procedure. When a block helps but wears off, ablation can extend the relief.
